Here we find a DAF 46 and a Saoutchik bodied Delahaye 175S. Two cars less alike could scarcely be imagined. The DAF is worth a couple of thousand, the Delahaye probably a couple of million.
But...they have something other than the number of wheels in common. The DAF, being a DAF, has the Variomatic belt-and-pulley CVT. The Delahaye, being a posh French car, has a posh French gearbox, a Cotal electromagnetic semi automatic. Neither of these had a reverse gear so each had a separate forward/reverse box.
So, there we have it. You can in principle go the same speed forwards and backwards in either of them.

Common on two stroke bubble and microcars, like Messerschmitts, because two strokes. They do the same with some marine engines.

Same speed in reverse as they went forwards. A great help for the Dingo scout car, that could hit 60 in reverse when spotted by the enemy.
